PPF Care in South India: Monsoon, Coastal Air, Hard Water and Heat

By Carsbuddy ·

Paint wears differently depending on where the car lives. We look after cars in Bangalore, Kochi and Coimbatore, and the care advice changes a little with each. This guide covers the conditions we see most, and what to do about each. For the general basics, start with how to maintain PPF.

Monsoon

Heavy rain is hard on a car even when it is well protected.

  • Wash soon after heavy rain. Road grime and rain residue dry on the film and in panel gaps.
  • Dry the car after washing so water does not dry into spots.
  • Park under cover where you can, and avoid trees that drop sap or fruit.
  • Consider a hydrophobic finish. XPEL Ultimate Fusion has a hydrophobic top coat, and a ceramic coating over PPF also helps water run off. Compare them in Ultimate Plus vs Ultimate Fusion.

Humid and Coastal Conditions in Kerala

Kochi is humid, wet for much of the year and close to the sea. Damp air and salt are hard on paint and glass, so regular washing matters more here.

  • Rinse off salt and dust rather than wiping the car dry.
  • Do not let moisture and grime sit in the panel edges.
  • A hydrophobic film or a coating over PPF makes the car easier to keep clean.

If you live near the water or drive along the coast often, tell us when you visit the Kochi studio and we will recommend accordingly.

Hard Water Spots

Hard water leaves white marks when it dries on paint or film. It is common in Bangalore, Kerala and across much of the south.

  • Do not let water air-dry on the car.
  • Dry with a clean microfibre towel straight after washing.
  • Wash in shade rather than in direct midday sun.

Dust and Construction Grit

City driving on dusty roads puts fine grit on the film.

  • Rinse before you touch the car. Never dry wipe a dusty car, as it drags grit across the surface.
  • Hand wash with a soft mitt, top down.
  • Avoid brush car washes.

Sun and Heat

Strong sun is a daily fact for cars in Bangalore and Coimbatore. XPEL films are designed to resist yellowing, and light swirls in the top coat heal with warmth from the sun. Park in shade when you can, which also helps the interior. See PPF for Indian roads for how film copes with sun, monsoon and stone chips.

Highway Trips and Stone Chips

Long drives between cities, such as Bangalore to Kochi or Coimbatore, put the bonnet, bumper and mirrors in the line of fire from gravel. This is what PPF is built for. After a long trip, wash off insects and tar soon, and check the front end for any deep cuts.

A Simple Rule for Any Climate

  1. Wash by hand when the car is dirty.
  2. Dry it.
  3. Deal quickly with bird droppings, sap, insects and tar.
  4. Bring the car in once a year for a check.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does monsoon damage PPF? Rain itself does not. Grime and rain residue left on the film can, so wash soon after heavy rain and dry the car.

Is PPF worth it in Kerala's humid climate? It protects paint from chips and scratches, and a hydrophobic film or coating makes the car easier to keep clean in wet weather.

How do I avoid water spots? Dry the car after every wash and avoid washing in direct sun.

Can I use a pressure washer? Yes, at a safe distance and never aimed at edges or seams.
