What a Proper Car Detail Includes: Exterior, Interior and Paint Correction Explained

"Detailing" is one of the most loosely used words in the car business. At one place it means a wash and a polish. At another it means a full day of careful work. If you do not know what is included, you cannot tell whether the price is fair. Here is what a proper detail should cover.
Detailing Is Not a Car Wash
A car wash removes loose dirt. Detailing restores and protects the car, one area at a time, with the right product and the right method for each surface. It is slower, more careful and more specific.
The Exterior
- Inspection. The paint is checked in good light, with you, and any chips, scratches or previous repair are noted before work starts.
- Hand wash. Done with clean tools to avoid adding new swirl marks.
- Decontamination. Embedded dirt, road film and fallout that a normal wash leaves behind are removed so the surface is truly clean.
- Paint correction, where needed. Machine polishing removes swirl marks and light scratches. It should correct what is needed, not remove more paint than necessary. Matte and satin paint is never machine polished.
- Protection. The finish is sealed with a coating or protected with film. See PPF vs ceramic coating.
The Interior
- Vacuuming of seats, carpets and boot
- Cleaning of the dashboard, door cards and trim with products suited to each material
- Care for leather, fabric and plastics
- Glass cleaned inside and out
- Attention to crevices and vents that normal cleaning misses
Glass, Wheels and Details
Wheels, arches, tyres and glass are part of a detail too. A car that is polished but has dirty wheel arches is not detailed.
What a Detail Does Not Do
Honesty matters here. A detail does not:
- Remove deep scratches or chips that have gone through the paint
- Make old, failed paint look new
- Replace PPF for stone-chip protection
