Should You Get PPF on a New Car? When to Book It and What to Ask Before You Do
By Carsbuddy ·
A new car has the best paint it will ever have. Every stone chip, scratch and swirl from here on is a step down from that. That is why a lot of owners ask about paint protection film (PPF) before the car has even left the showroom. Here is how to think about it.
Why New Cars Are the Best Time for PPF
PPF protects paint that already exists. It cannot restore damage, it can only stop more of it. On a brand-new car, there is nothing to hide and nothing to correct, so the film goes over paint at its best and keeps it there.
On an older car, we often have to polish out swirls and marks first, because film and coating seal in whatever is underneath. On a new car, preparation is simpler, which is one reason this is the cleanest time to do it. For how the film itself works, see how paint protection film works.
When to Book It
The short answer is as soon as you can after delivery, and before the car starts collecting road wear. The first weeks of driving, parking and washing are when avoidable marks tend to appear.
- Before delivery, if you can plan it. Talk to us while the car is still being prepared so we can schedule it as soon as it arrives.
- Right after delivery. Drive it straight to the studio rather than using it for a few weeks first.
- Not "someday". Film applied over paint that already has chips and swirls protects the damage, not the finish.
What a Good Installer Checks First
Even on a new car, the paint should be inspected before any film goes on. Dealer handling and transport can leave light marks or contamination.
- Paint is washed and decontaminated so nothing is trapped under the film.
- The surface is inspected under proper lighting for defects.
- If something needs correcting, it is dealt with before the film is applied, not after.
Good preparation is a large part of what decides how the finished job looks and how long it lasts.
Full Car or Just the Front
You do not have to wrap the whole car. Many owners choose by where the car takes the most hits.
- Front end: bumper, bonnet, fenders, mirrors and headlights, which face stones and debris.
- High-touch areas: door edges, door cups and boot sill, where keys, bags and nails cause marks.
- Full body: the most complete cover, usually chosen for new and luxury cars.

What Film to Ask For
Our PPF is genuine XPEL film, offered with up to ten years of protection under a written warranty. Whether a car reaches the full term depends on the film you choose, how it is installed and how the car is looked after. Read how long Carsbuddy PPF lasts and XPEL film tiers compared for the detail.
Questions to Ask Before You Book
- Which film is being used, and is it genuine XPEL?
- Is the studio an authorised installer?
- What is covered by the warranty, and what is not?
- How is the paint prepared and inspected before the film goes on?
- What aftercare do you recommend, and when should I come back?
Looking After a Freshly Filmed Car
Follow the installer's aftercare advice for the first days, avoid harsh washing and keep the car out of heavy mud and pressure washing near edges at first. Long-term care is covered in how to maintain PPF.
Frequently Asked Questions

How soon after buying should I get PPF? As soon as practical after delivery, before the car picks up avoidable marks.
Do I need to polish a new car first? Not always, but it should be inspected. If there are light defects, they are corrected before the film goes on.
Can I add a ceramic coating over PPF? Yes. A ceramic or graphene layer over PPF is a common combination. See PPF vs ceramic coating.
